Sky has apparently “declined to comment” on the show’s cancellation, but there may be a number of factors behind the decision.
Britannia is a very expensive production to make by British budget standards.
As happened with several of our favourite shows , the extended gap between seasons due to the pandemic very likely caused a loss of momentum for interest in Britannia, which it failed to regain upon its return in 2021.
There’s also the relaunch of EPIX to take into account.
The American broadcaster of Britannia was presumably also a key financial contributor to the show’s production, but their recent rebrand as MGM+ may have led to a refocusing on commissioning newer shows rather than renewing old EPIX titles.

A Guardian article back in 2018 indicated that Britannia was then budgeted at $6 million per episode which made it a pretty expensive product for a niche broadcast audience. Unfortunately it's in the nature of such things that it's really difficult to get the talent back together once a series is dropped even if a budget could now be found.

Shame it ended like it did.
Must admit, all seasons we had stayed on spot with good episodes.
Not sure I remember a poor one.
It did go through quite a few production changes each series and backing, but kept the spirit of the idea.

I have watched and rewatched Brittania. Such an entertaining story, perfect historical fictionwith a magical twist. But I can not stress enough how dispicable it is to leave a series on such a huge cliffhanger (understatement). Ending the show this way takes so much from the previous seasons. The entire premise of the show is that there is a prophecy being played out by a chosen one where everyone has their path and part to play. For 3 years fans watch to see when the prophecy and the chosen ones role in it will be revealed, just to be completely denied. It's almost disrepectful to fans, as if the time invested by the fans to follow this story does not matter. It's like reading an amazing book and finding out it was printed without the last chapter! Not Cool. If another full season is just not feasible, how about a mini series, or a movie. Really anything that will just give us the last chapter in the story.

Unfortunately if the economics don't work then it's not going to happen: that's a relatively expensive set of cast and creatives to put together just to finish off a story arc for a niche (effectively UK-only) audience, and having a juvenile lead is also an issue when production spans years.

As noted in the links above, Epix no longer exists and MGM+ doesn't operate in the UK. Without investment from someone on the scale of Amazon or Netflix it's extremely unlikely that Sky would think it's financially worthwhile to make such a thing.

My one thing to add: Americans do watch this show. Portland, Oregon here. I really wanted to see if my pet theory of Cait eventually becoming a druid mentor type for Boudica was going to happen. Very dissapointed by the cancellation.

So disappointed! I've just finished watching it solidly over the last few weeks and I had no idea the ending was missing! I was so in to it and now just the huge disappointment that I'm not going to see the prophecy play out in full with Cait and the Veran and Rome etc. Theres literally no end. Its a huge and unwanted cliffhanger. What a total rubbish decision....
