I have recently taken sky broadband and talk after moving from virgin, if i pick up my landline phone  there is no dial tone, the engineer said it didnt need plugging in at the wall, do i have to plug it anywhere to work??

Yes, you need to plug it into the phone socket at the back of your broadband Hub.
