Last Saturday Openreach sorted out a broadband issue, all seems OK. Today I have discovered that my landline number has been switched with my neighbours who are also Sky customers. So is this as simple as a connection error by the engineer as part of his repair?

It sounds like it. I would suggest both reporting it to Sky who will advise Openreach.
