Landline disconnected and used for installation

Sky used my home phone line to set up my services. The engineer cut the line that was running into the house. I have asked them to reinstate me to the position that I was in before so that I can have a phone which is not reliant on the internet and they say that this is not possible. They have offered an alternative with a lower broadband speed which is not feasible for proper running of the TV service and internet. They have not explained  in a way that I understand why I can't have an independent phone line. Is there another solution such as splitting the line outside the house? Can I organise/do this myself? I'm not technical but there are medical/care and alarm systems systems that rely on phonelines so what happens in those cases? Can they just cut the line and say it's tough?

@PatriciaNewlife  As the old way of delivering phone is being phased out you will need to use the hub for your phone.

Sky and any other providers won't be able to go back to the old way.

Like you I'm a customer here, Sky Employees are clearly identified as such.

The national PSTN (analogue) phone service is being switched off at the end of 2025

In preparation for that, since September 2023 all new broadband provision (including 'switching' ISP) is without a PSTN service: ISPs simply cannot purchase the previous technology on the wholesale market.

Systems such as alarms and monitors which currently use PSTN will all need to be replaced with equipment which uses either a router connection or cellular data service by the end of 2025, or sooner if the occupant of the address chooses to move to a different ISP.

Re: Landline disconnected and used for installation

Thank you for your reply. I was concerned about not having a landline but I see that they are becoming obsolete. I'll just have to plug in a phone set  in my bedroom and keep my mobile charged 🙂

Note that once telephony is delivered to a router, internal extension sockets no longer work.

We have a 4 handset DECT cordless setup with the base station plugged into the BT router, and that works fine.
