Keeping landline number
Hi,
We are moving house (in the same exchange area) but Sky say they have no capability to keep our current landline number. Has anyone else had this issue and managed to overcome it, every time we ask Sky they say no - but technically it's possible so not sure why they keep saying no!
Thanks in advance

Re: Keeping landline number
I don't know the reason (might be something to do with Sky VOIP, but that's conjecture), but it's confirmed in Sky's help guide here that you won't be able to keep your number: https://www.sky.com/help/articles/home-move-more-info

I can see why there may be very good technical reasons why portability isn't possible in some cases but I do struggle to understand how that very sweeping statement by Sky is compatible with the relevant sections of the Communications Act (2003) and its implementation in the Ofcom 'General Conditions of Entitlement' (sections B3 and C7)

Re: Keeping landline number
That is the part I struggle with..OFCOM haven't changed their regs on number porting etc so why is the answer no from Sky...surely it means they aren't complying with OFCOM regs?

Re: Keeping landline number
I am tempted to let it all happen as Sky suggest but complain to OFCOM and see where it goes!

Unfortunately Ofcom aren't set up to deal with such complaints: the escalation process goes from ISP/telco to appointed ADR.
Ofcom might be interested in it as a general enquiry, but presumably Sky are fairly confident that what they are doing is OK.

That would be my assumption too. I can't imagine Sky would apparently flout regulatory requirements without being confident that they were on firm ground in so doing.

Re: Keeping landline number
OFCOM B3: categorically states that a 'losing' CP must release a UK geographic number for porting.
Ironically though, the 'gaining' provider can refuse to accept the port of a number for any number of 'technical' but typically commercial reasons.
This makes the eventually arriving 'One Touch Switching' quite ridiculous, as the porting rules are unchanged..
