Hi
I will soon be changing from Super Fast Broadband to Ultra Fast which means having a fiber box installed.
I have been given conflicting information regarding keeping my landline number (which I have had for 34 years). I spoke to someonem at Sky tech dept. who told me I will have to plug my phone into the router (which will be connected to the ONT box). It will generate a number and I will have to phone a friend who will then tell me what my new number is. I called the tech dept. back to confirm this and was told I can keep my current number. But I have lost confidence in this, as I am not prepared to lose my number.
Has anyone else had this problem and have kept their number?
I have also heard that Sky can Port a number, though I'm not too sure what this entails.
So any information on this would help.

@vipsana Then that all will change is you will just plug your phone into the back of the router and you should keep your old number when this happens.

Re: Keeping Phone Number
@vipsana That is rubbish if you are already with Sky for broadband and phone. All that should happen is your services get moved from copper to fibre. There is no change in the phone number that you already have.
Where do you plug your phone into just now? The socket in the wall or into the back of the router?

Re: Keeping Phone Number
Hi I have just signed up to get Sky Q and fibre broadband after a torturous 1 hour plus call and amongst all the stuff they sent was a bit about the Sky Talk number which will be informed at a later date ! Plus the business of plugging it in to the Sky Hub to make a call. Like the previous post I do not want my number to be changed, none of that was mentioned !
Also the throwaway remark in the paperwork that extension sockets won't work - my phone is plugged into such a socket as the main socket is located behind a heavy bookcase and impossible to get at. Am I right in thinking the master socket on the wall will now disappear and be replaced by the "Hub" which I assume is a glorified router (I am old so probably not the right "parlance" these days !!). Panicking a bit as this all sounds like a load of disruption, but as I said it was a terrible agonising call which went on and on as she was not answering my questions properly. I feel as if I have been beaten into submission by the powers of Sky !!
Another little aside - I phoned 150 initially and it was answered as "welcome to BT " ?? Thought Sky customers get through to Sky ?? Didn't pursue that as didn't wan't to be patroisingly told if I ever got through that it was the wrong number ! Anyone else had this problem ?

If you're having a full fibre service, your master phone socket (edited to add) and all extension sockets will become redundant on installation.
If BT answers your call to 150, your phone service is currently provided by them.

Re: Keeping Phone Number
Thanks for that , have I misunderstood the term "extension socket" ?? I am talking about a normal electric extension socket when you haven't got enough power sockets. Do they mean in the paperwork a "phone" extension socket ? Sorry to be dull. Still don't get the 150 BT thing as I pay Sky for everything so surely that means my service provider is Sky ? Seriously thinking about backtracking on the Broadband now but I expect we'll all have to be changed over eventually. I've got a horrible feeling it will all go wrong !! Case in point - had a fault on phone line so reported it to Sky - Openreach men came, tinkered about, changed the master socket then left saying all okay. I then rang my landline and guess what ? - fault was still there ! Luckily they were still in the street chatting. Turned out the fault was at the exchange box ! But they didn't even check the line before they left - surely that's basic service ??!! I know that's strictly not Sky but it's just indicative of the fact that no one wants to do a job properly - we live in sad times !!

To be honest, I haven't seen the paperwork, but I would guess they're referring to phone extensions, rather than mains extension sockets

I don't get that either. If your landline service is with Sky, 150 should be answered by them, not BT
Ah - just a thought in a small number of cases Sky provide their landline service via a line leased from BT, rather than one within their own network. Perhaps in those circumstances 150 would be answered by BT.

You're right - currently by Jan 2027

Yes, I would have expected them to carry out a line test before they declared the job was done.
