I've just had a call from a "BT Operator" trying to connect me to a caller - it failed miserably, then he advised that there may be a fault on my line, he would check and call me back. He did this and said it was fine it could be the handset, then proceeded to do some checks on the phone saying that there was interference on the microphone. Then it got weird, he asked me was I wearing rings, were they big rings, did I have any metal or watches near the handset, which I said I did, he asked me to switch hands, where there were more rings, was asked how many then was there a watch, which there was a smart watch. At this point I got a bit suspect, so I got my son to hold the phone and held both my hands at arms length from the handset, and surprise he couldn't get the issue any longer. He then said he would speak to the engineers and call me back tomorrow. I explained that I wouldn't be there and only my children would and they wouldn't answer the landline as nobody they know has that number. He then said he'd call me back early next week.
Question is - is this a potential scam do you think? Could they be trying to connect to my smart watch thinking about things like apple pay etc., (not that I have that on my fitbit), or is this genuine. I'm logging here in case there's anythign been planted on my house phone line now and my bill increased by huge amounts I have evidence that someone did something at around 9.15-9.30pm today 21st Sept 2023.
Interested to know if anyone else has ever had anything like this before though.

If Sky is your ISP/Telco then BT is not. There's a division of BT called Openreach which handles the physical infrastructure for other companies but they don't call ISP subscribers.
Frankly it all sounds extremely dodgy to me, which does suggest criminal intent.
They can't do anything remotely to the line or any device at your address, but may attempt to convince you to do so yourself by talking you into downloading and installing remote access software which they would then use.
It's also possible they are working towards arranging either a bogus engineer visit or to try and get payment for such services in advance.

Re: BT Operator call is it a scam?
Thanks for the reply that's exactly what I thought as well; I wouldn't download anything or agree to any visits by engineers etc.,
Really helpful though and thanks again for confirming my thoughts as well.
