Actually for Sky+ with a dial-up connection it was an early exercise in viewing habit telemetry, with the added advantage that users could vote on 'interactive' television shows.

 

Of course once broadcast ceases (around turn of the decade for satellite, a few years later for DTTV) every second of our consumption will be monitorable.

Thought I ought to come back to report that it suddenly came right again. I had put a complaint in to Sky but it corrected itself before they actually wrote back to me asking for details, so who knows
