New sky remote can't be programmed

I have purchased a replacemnt Sky + remote from Amazon. It doesn't have a version number on it and it doesn't programme properly with the sky box and not at all with the tv. Can it be programmed or is is it a knock-off?

Did you purchase it directly from Amazon or a third party seller because if it his a legit one it should have a version number on it.

I bought a new Sky HD+ box from an Ebay seller and the box works fine but the remote control doesn't have a version number on it - and it took ages before I found a TV code that would work with my LG television.  Explain what "doesn't programme properly with the sky box" actually means.
