I've had a Sky+ box for a long time but when I want to watch a show on my multi box in the bedroom that is password protected and I enter my password from the main box downstairs it says it's incorrect and won't go any further

If it is asking for a pin code then try the last 4 digits on the viewing card that is in the box.
