I apparently own one of the pucks I have - at least they only seem to want one back when my contract ends in a few days.
So if I sign up to a new contract and whole home, they send me one new and one additional puck, will I be able to reset this one and connect it to my new account?

No reason why not. I factory reset and sold my customer-owned puck and the purchaser was able to activate it successfully on their own Whole Home subscription.
