Re: UHD HDR on Sky Stream: A Real Problem

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

On my Panasonic TV, 16 yo DX902,  HLG plays perfectly.  There is a setting HDMI HDR setting under setup on the main menu of the TV where I can set HDR On/Off.  Is there such a setting on other brands?  I also moved from Q to Stream and if anything the HLG is better than on Q for the F1 UHD channel.  Pic for reference(might take awhile to get through)

Re: UHD HDR on Sky Stream: A Real Problem

I'm sorry to be the barer of bad news, but this problem lies soley with your TV.

I had the same issue with a reasonably modern Samsung TV, however the TV just wasn't capable of producing good HDR and the brightness required.

I then upgraded to an OLED TV (LG A2), which you can pick up now for about £500 and the difference was mindblowing HDR content looks incredible.

Re: UHD HDR on Sky Stream: A Real Problem

Ok, my projector has the option to disable HDR rather than auto. Fixes the problem for both sky F1 live and BBC UHD. Turns out projector nits are low hundreds so HLG will never be any good.

Just need to switch the HDR setting manually between content. Not the end of the world.

Re: UHD HDR on Sky Stream: A Real Problem

  • Thank you I gave my old [9 months] to my youngest daughter and bought a Samsung oled s90d television and HDR all fine now.
  • Sky say they will reduce my Sky Sports bill by £7 a month until the end of my contract but I have not had an email confirming it yet?

Re: UHD HDR on Sky Stream: A Real Problem

. I have sky stream and an s90c oled tv and get great picture watching sky sports UHD HLG . I put sky cinema UHD on demand on and the picture is overblown, washed out and hazy. No TV setting fix it. I then went on the iPlayer app via sky stream app and put on blue planet 2 HLG and the picture is perfect. It an issue with sky cinema UHD. I only get this problem with sky cinema UHD content.

Re: UHD HDR on Sky Stream: A Real Problem

Hey there.

I seem to be having a similar issue and it only seems to happen when I'm watching TV dramas in HDR (HLG through sky stream).

I have tested iPlayer and while watching some uhd dramas, the same thing happens.

I have no problem like yourself while watching Sky sports HDR content.

Just wanted to know if you've had any updates to your issue.

Many thanks

HDR picture issues with Sky Stream

Hi all, this is my first post. Please be kind.

I would just like to know if anyone is suffering with picture issues on their TV while viewing HDR content through Sky Stream (HLG)?

Specifically TV Dramas and when the scenes get dark.

Example being while watching Succession or Peacemaker in UHD HDR, when the scenes are dark, there is a lot of blooming and flashing like the brightness or the backlight of the TV is constantly adjusting. Makes for very uncomfortable viewing.

I don't ever seem to have problems while watching Sky sports in UHD HDR (maybe because it's never actually dark) and I don't have these issues when watching HDR content outside of sky where HLG is not being used.

I hope this makes sense. But would love to know if anyone else is experiencing these issues and whether the issue may be with my TV.

Re: HDR picture issues with Sky Stream

Sadly, most issues caused by dark HDR is down to the TV not being being bright enough. I had a mid range Samsung which despite being labelled as an HDR 10 TV just couldn't get bright enough.  I upgraded to a  LG OLED and the difference was amazing. My advice would be try and disable the HDR or upgrade your TV.

Re: UHD HDR on Sky Stream: A Real Problem

We had the same issue with Sky Q where UHD was crisp but the picture was dull. When I went to the settings and go to UHD your current settings are 10bit, I changed it to 8bit and the dull appearing disappeared. The picture quality was amazing.

Of course this was for Sky Q. Not sure if you can do that on Sky Stream, how this worked for me. Try it if you have the option as it worked for me.
