The whole of the subtitles wasn't working.
I rang Sky yesterday and they sorted it out. Did a factory reset.

Hi Jane. What content are you trying to use subtitles on?

According to an answer given by a Sky employee on another thread, a factory reset of the puck is necessary to get subtitles working:
Please try the following steps to reset your device:
(This will delete your Playlist and sign you out of any TV apps, including Netflix.)
- Press Home on your Sky remote.
 - Keep pressing down and select Settings.
 - Select System Management then Resets & updates and Factory reset.
