I'm trying to refresh the apps on sky stream using the settings on the home page, the apps keep freezing / buffering but system is going into standby mode before the the app have refreshed and don't appear to be updating

All the apps are stored on Sky's servers, not the puck. Once you've started the refresh it'll carry on, regardless of the state of your puck. Quite why Sky say it can take up to 24 hours for the refresh to complete is anyone's guess. It seems abnormally excessive.
In the meantime give your puck a full reboot by turning off at the wall for a few minutes then power back on. This can often help speed things up.

Hi I've just received an email saying there was a reply to my orgininal post, but I'm unable to access. Sky Community page saying I don't have permission. ???
