I'm new to Sky do I leave my pic on or turn off at night

Like most electronic equipment it is better to leave it plugged in to the mains, they often fail more quickly when started from cold every day.
Depending on your connection settings the puck will get updates overnight.
Just put into standby using the remote (white light out), however if you leave it on by accident it will shut off itself after a few hours.
Standby power consumption is minute.
