Sky Stream: Two Weeks On

I realise I may as well be howling at the moon given Sky's history of not responding to anything, about anything, but if it's useful to anyone on these forums - I switched from Sky Q to Sky Stream 2 weeks ago and here are my first impressions.

If by any chance anyone here has the ear of someone who can see the roadmap for Sky Stream, so much the better.

The first thing to say is that I didn't switch products willingly but I had to move house and the new landlord wasn't keen on having a dish put up - sometimes you have to choose your battles.

In some ways it's actually a better product but that's mostly because Sky Q is already doing things that it was never designed for, and Entertainment OS is bound to be getting more time from the developers.

I didn't think I would take to streaming everything, as I was very wedded to using the hard drive to record programs but I'm getting used to that now - The big problem is that because so much of it is controlled by the broadcasters' own apps, it means that the experience is completely inconsistent depending on what channel you're trying to watch, but hopefully that will come with time.

The most problematic is Channel 4 where starting from the beginning of the show if you join late is a very hit and miss affair and often involves waiting until the end, for it to be uploaded, where of course you then have to put up with unskippable adverts unless you pay a surcharge.

From the Sky side the biggest drawback compared to the old system for me is that all the Sky Pucks work in isolation, so it's a far less joined up experience in a house with multiple TVs. Far more worrying is the fact that they don't communicate with your Sky Go account, so you no longer have the facility to remote record (well, add to playlist) and the TV guide omits many channels - notably the BBC ones, because Sky Go can't see that you are on the same Wi-Fi network as the boxes.

Picture quality is a significant improvement over Sky Q which looked washed out even using the highest quality HDMI cables.

I don't find the interface as friendly as the old one but maybe that's just me being too used to Sky Q for too long.

There's notable bugs (including some I haven't found yet, I'm sure) but the biggest to me is if there's a slightest glitch in the internet connection, it crashes so you have to reboot the box, which is a right faff. In fact Sky Customer Services told me that they recommend using Ethernet wherever possible but even that has the same lack of bounce-back ability.

The biggest frustration from my side has always been that Sky doesn't integrate its products very well with third party, and the opportunity for proper app store seems really squandered - though I fully appreciate that it is in Sky's best interest to have a walled garden, even though it's not in the customers interest. Same reason I guess that you only get Netflix Basic bundled instead of Ultimate with Sky Q - they'd rather you watch their services that go outside their ecosystem.

I'm sure they'll be plenty more to find in the coming weeks, But those are my first impressions which, in short, are that it's not nearly as bad as I expected but not nearly as good as it could be - and hopefully the fact that there's a lot more active development of entertainment OS means that we'll see some of these missing features and bugs fixed a lot quicker.

On balance I'd still rather have kept with Sky Q a little bit longer but so far I've been pleasantly surprised.

Re: Sky Stream: Two Weeks On

We've had Stream for a couple of months now and overall I think it's a pretty great product. We watch most things On-Demand anyway previously through a physical recording or VOD and I can't fault the Stream system. There are now recording limits. Miss the start of a series? No worries, add it to the planner and it'll bookmark the whole lot. No missing the end of programs because the recording ends early and the picture quality, especially UHD, is absolutely outstanding!!!.

Downsides are I don't trust the UHD apps such as Netflix, Disney+ and AppleTV just doesn't work properly with my TV but luckily I have a Samsung QLED and the native apps are excellent.

You also need fast broadband especially if you have two Pucks. We have 100mbps+ and on occasion we've got close to maxing it out so we're moving to full fibre 500mbps at the end of the week.

Re: Sky Stream: Two Weeks On

If you have fast reliable broadband - stream is brilliant. The only gripe I have is FF/RW and some of the third party apps could be improved. I don't understand why the FF/RW is so poor. FF/RW works so well on Virgin Media stream

Re: Sky Stream: Two Weeks On

With stream your best option is to subscribe to ITVX and 4+ then you are totally AD free but of course that comes at a price. Now TV Boost also is seamless AD free across the platform.

this nonsensical feature on Stream to pay to FF is beyond me and was very hit n miss when I used it, that alone is enough to stop me subscribing.

I ditched stream over six months ago and I still read today the same issues as were prevalent some twelve months ago!

@Gincap I've never had an issue with FF. I've found the sweet spot to be x6 speed

@christhedj interesting post and you make some sound points. I have been fortunate to have attended sessions with the team behind the Entertainment OS and the platform so may be able to help a bit.

You comment that the integration of the apps into the main platform leaves a lot to be desired which is something I and Sky agree on. Sky have improved the integration greatly since the platform launnched with voice search and recommendations working across many but not all apps. However this requires co-operation between the app owners and Sky which is not always forthcoming. This does give an uneven experience thst I know Sky are working to improve. The Ch4 app is one of the most problematic now ITVx is mainlly tamed.

You mention an app store which is most unlikely to happen. The pucks do not download and run apps like a smart TV or many streaming devices instead the apps run remotely triggered by the os. This means updates etc are seamless but does mean you cannot load whatever app you want. The reasoning behind this is partially to improve support as customers pick up the phone to moan at Sky when Discovery+ goes on the blink try that with Samsung or LG. 😀

Unlike Sky Q you do not have a local server and client devices with Stream each device is standalone which gives many advantages not least a higher limit on devices and the ability to watch UHD anywhere. Integration is achieved by use of Playlists which are stored on the server and should pick up where you left off assuming you have added the content to yoy]ur playlist. The Continue watching rail also helps but has been buggy recently as several of my fellow Superusers keep nagging Sky about.

It does take time to get used to a new OS and getvthe best from it the help videos built into the system are useful and well worth watching.

This is pretty much my experience as well.  PQ is better, and the UI is just different.  In my view where on SKy Q and v360 the live channels are the focus, whereas in EntertainmentOS they are just a content source the same as the apps.

There are bugs still, ITVx content not syncing in the playlist is a big one.

My recommendation is that ethernet rarely solves any of the issues, a stable internet connection does.  It's much better to invest in getting good wifi through the house than worrying with Ethernet.

Second big recommendation is if you find a bad bug, then raise a compliant.  They can log onto the box for errors and then check the bug on their Sky Glass they have in the call centre and then raise with the developers.  It also focusses minds if the amount of complaints on Stream/Glass rise as someone will have it on their KPIs.
