Playlist Query

HI . Considering joining Sky and noticed new users are expected to use Sky Stream rather than Sky Q, which has generated some queries which I hoped would be clarified for me :-

Understand cannot record programmes but I love watching F1 and in the case of an early start in the past I would record the start of the race and join it say halfway through then watch from the start of the recording as if live but whilst still recording (chase play). Would it be possible to do the same by some means with Sky Stream?

Assuming I missed a race would the race be available to watch later if I summoned it from a menu?

Lastly - confused as to why both Sky and Virgin seem hellbent on removing the most useful feature of the cable/satellite proposition namely the ability to timeshift programmes by recording them for later consumption - with the added bonus that the user can fast forward the advertisements and turn a one hour programme into a 45 minute watching session. Presumably something to do with losing advertising revenue?

Hi @tippunmon and welcome to the forum.  Sky are promoting the streaming platform so will try to encourage you to subscribe to Glass or Stream but there is nothing to stop you subscribing to Sky Q if that is what you actually want.

The streaming platform has an option to "watch from start" if you turn on a programme that has already started.

I appreciate this is a personal choice but I have never missed being able to record as I find streaming just as good.  Many will disagree with me though.  Sometimes programmes aired will only be available to watch 24 hours later but this is out of the hands of Sky who reply on the broadcasters making the programmes available.  I find that they will sometimes be available on the App (ITVX for example) before they appear in my playlist (the current Tour de France is a good example).

Hi @tippunmon

See: https://www.sky.com/help/articles/your-playlist-and-tv-guide-sky-glass

You can cloud record on most channels. However some channels only allow playback via their app (i.e. BBC iPlayer, ITVX etc).

As well as cloud recording it has a watch from start function or as you state content can be watched on demand. You can skip ads on Sky Stream but they charge for the privilege. See: https://www.sky.com/help/articles/ad-skipping-sky-glass

I guess the whole put from Sky perspective is it's not satellite, it's streaming. Rights for programs and channels is vastly different now with broadcasters wanting to retain control over their content. I can't comment re Virgin as never lived in a service area for them.

Sky Q is still available for purchase.

Re: Playlist Query

This is how streaming TV will develop in the future, with the  commercial TV providers gaining control over the advertisments that companies pay a huge sum to show during ad breaks. So you will either suck it up and watch the commercials, or pay to skip them. It's worth noting that EETV's ip platform will not allow you to skip the ads on any ITV programme you've recorded on their Pro Box, regardless of having an ITVX premium sub.

Given time-shifting has helped destroy the basic business model of all commercial television channels, then yes ; )

Re: Playlist Query

Sky Puck is an absolute NIGHTMARE. Issues with skipping, freezing, and fails to pause. Playlist empties without warning. Puts incorrect programmes in the playlist. You have to constantly rebate. Issues with sound loss. Having to constantly reset, reboot etc. Add skipping helps a little for an extra cost. I am constantly on the phone in the lengthy queues waiting for help. Customer Services are not always that great!! Some put the phone down, a few language barriers but a fair bit of mis information along the way too. A complete rip off for what they charge. My amazon stick is FAR better.
