@Yorkiecherry I think needing a PIN is due to the watershed requirements and is required by all customers accessing age appropriate content. Think it's an Ofcom requirement.

Thanks for the link, i had already read this, but this seems at highish level, for example there is no mention of the "display live TV on startup" setting in settings menu, which I'm sure was not there in the previous OS.

It makes me wonder what other changes are not listed on this page....

It would be nice to see a release note detailing all changes.

Actually it was on the previous OS and was offered to customers in an A/B test.

I Myselm never saw it on the previous OS, but we saw plenty from reports on here that did.

Apps or channels?

Any channel carrying post-watershed content* before 21:00 requires the Mandatory Daytime Protection PIN to be applied: this is stipulated by Ofcom in the Broadcasting Code and cannot be switched off by the user.

* anything which would rate as 12 or higher on the BBFC scale.

'Terrestrial' channels simply don't carry* age-sensitive content before 21:00

Historically they never did (which is where the whole 'watershed' concept comes from in the first place) and there's no PIN mechanism on digital terrestrial television reception which could enable it after Ofcom changed the regulation back in 2019 to widen content availability behind MDP.

That is not technically true, for example an episode of Star Trek Voyager rated as 12 appeared on Sky mix on freeview, no PIN required, on Sky stream, I was asked for a PIN, content was aired at 6pm.

The Ofcom rules seem to state that its up to the broadcaster, if the episode is rated 12 or above and has a certain level of violence, etc then a PIN is required, if that threshold is not met a PIN is not required.  In my example Star Trek Voyager was not full of gore, blood, violence, swearing, etc, its Star Trek afterall !  and so it could be aired without a PIN on Freeview.

I think Sky have just decided to add a PIN to all content that is 12 or above regardless of content as its easier.

Quite possibly. 

Somehow humanity overcomes worse obstacles, and I suspect a television executive will have never been sacked for avoiding an Ofcom fine.
