Is my broadband speed fast enough?

Hi I currently have Sky Q but my old 2 tb box is not HDR compatible so I'm thinking of moving to Stream as they are HDR compatible but wondered if my Sky broadband speed is fast enough it is a consistent 34 Mbps I am looking to have an extra puck in the bedroom but I will only be using one TV at any time. Has anyone got a similar set up?

You are very much borderline with that speed. It doesn't take much loss of bandwidth for the pucks to start stuttering, freezing or crashing completely, especially when using UHD and there's more than one of them. If any other device in your household was to use a bit of bandwidth, even just to check an email, it could send the pucks into a tailspin.

You could try it though. Stream is still quite an unpredictable system. It works well for some on slowish connections and terribly for others.

@Ripleys_Cat Thank you for your views I think I will take a chance and get Stream as if it doesn't work for me I can revert back to Q within the first month. 👍

Yeah, that's the only way to know for sure if it'll work. You don't need to send back your Q equipment until after the cooling off period for Stream so you can revert back to Q quite easily if you decide it's not gonna work.

You'll need to ring Sky to order Stream - you can't switch online from Q.

Re: Is my broadband speed fast enough?

The big difference between Stream and Q is that everything is streamed and it eats bandwidth especially when streaming UHD, HDR and Atmos audio... 35mbps is the bare minimum really to get a clean stream with no buffering but with you being so close to the minimum requirements any other internet access whilst watching TV could easily cause issues...... Also, Sky don't use HDR10 for HDR. They use HLG which not all tvs support, especially older ones.

Re: Is my broadband speed fast enough?

My FTTC has a sync speed of 34 Mbps.

I purchased my puck when the recommended speed for HD was 10.

I only stream in HD over a wired connection from router to puck.

I can easily run the puck and 2 laptops on Sky Go showing the same progammes in HD without any issues.

Doing a speed test with and without the puck on results in a loss of about 5 Mbps on the test.

As long as other devices are not pinching too much bandwidth then you should be fine if your WiFi signal is solid without any interference.

If you have Virgin Media fibre why not get Virgin Stream instead of Sky Stream???

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

@Steve93 the connection to your hub is easily fast enough - each puck cannot use more than 35Mb/s at the outside. However its the speed and stability of the wifi signal where the puck is going to be located which is the key.

Re: Is my broadband speed fast enough?

I've already got VM Stream, it's good but there are some anomalies, ie ch4 doesn't show the last program.

a good thing is you can FFW through adverts on all channels,  just wanted to give Sky Stream a try on a 30 day rolling contract
