Can get rid of the checking update on my screen
Need to know how to get rid of this message as I can't watch the tv

It sounds like a message from your tv, not your Sky box. What exactly does the message say?

Typically an onscreen message generated by the television itself will require the TV remote control handset to action or dismiss it: the Sky remote cannot do this.
