Audio issues with Sky Puck

Sky Stream audio

Since the outset almost a year ago we have had issues with audio across several TV channels.

Sky Sports – need to turn on Audio Description to get the commentary else it is just stadium noise.

BBC Planet Earth – need to turn on AD to hear David Attenborough and so we also get AD describing the ripple of waves or whatever (which we don’t need)

On some TV channels the commentary is often far quieter than the background sounds.

Often AD doesn’t work when you change to a channel when AD is actually turned on.  Solution – go to AD and turn it OFF and then turn it ON again!!!  The whole issue is very frustrating!

We have a Majority K2 soundbar with a Sony Smart 4k TV.  We have turned off the soundbar and listened with the TV speakers only – the result is no different so conclude that the problem is with the broadcast not the TV/soundbar.

If I watch channels using Freesat there are no audio issues.

Re: Audio issues with Sky Puck

The Majority K2 soundbar is a 2.1 channel setup, essentially stereo with a .1 sub 'channel',

It sounds as though the soundbar is being fed a 5.1 or greater soundtrack but is only playing back the front left and front right channels (ie no downmixing), missing that all important centre channel where the vast majority of dialogue is.

You could try going into Settings > picture and Sound > Sound > change output from Auto/DD+/DD /Passthrough to PCM Stereo. This will cause the Sky puck itself to do the downmixing and you should get stereo sound, including dialogue, from your puck.

Re: Audio issues with Sky Puck

Thanks for that .   The soundbar will only work using PCM Stereo.   Other options are mute.  Advice from Majority was to use PCM Stereo when I approached them.

@john+blackmore did you mean to mark your issue answered (solved)?

Re: Audio issues with Sky Puck

  • No.  The problem remains.  Using PCM Stereo is our only option and that is where the problem lies.   I have raised this again with Majority as it is possible the soundbar is faulty.
  • Any further help from here would be welcome!

Re: Audio issues with Sky Puck

The advice from the soundbar manufacturer (and from above) has led to my changing the TV settings back to basic Dolby (from Dolby Plus) and this has reduced the problems.

However the Sky Sports broadcast is still an issue (as described above).  Am seriously thinking the only answer might be to ask Sky to change us over to Sky Q and see if the problem recurs!!
