Viewing card required?

We cannot view any recordings, the on screen message is asking for a viewing card but we don't have one! Why would we need a viewing card to view a bbc recording or to record bbc? I pay for bbc with my tv license! Any help would be appreciated Thank you Jane

Sky Q requires a Sky viewing card in order to have any functionality because it's a subscription platform with loaned hardware, irrespective of the content being consumed.
