TV for HDR sky q

Hi lovely people ,

I've had my LG49UH77OV for 7 years , looking to upgrade to either 48LG C3 oled or Samsung 50QN 90C , as I watch a lot of footy in HDR I'm wondering what tv people are using for Sky's HLG HDR , don't know my current sets HDR nit brightness but I do notice a  dimming  in when I switch to watch the HDR connect , many thanks

Dimming on HLG is caused by the TV not being able to deliver enough peak brightness, so it has to scale everything down to fit the wider relative contrast of HDR into the physical brightness of the TV.

I use a panasonic OLED. Same panel as the LGs. I won't touch an LCD, they still don't look right to me, albeit they've come a very long way.

@Tom+Shinkwin quite happy with the HDR/HLG content mainly F1 and  football .

Sky Q box connected to  LG UK6300PLB  tweaked the picture settings to suit my viewing of HDR/HLG content.

hi @Tom+Shinkwin

Like @Chodley I have a Panasonic OLED so no personal experience of either makes but LG OLEDs are well thought of and many here I think have C1s or C2s or similar. (I have had Panasonic for ages)

Although, IIRC, there was a hiccup using SKY with the initial C2s but it was fixed by a C2 firmware update

Samsungs don't have OLED but their own tech  but is still at it's heart, I think, LCD with some of it's limitations. Samsung are a popular brand & that TV does seem to have some good reviews

If I was choosing. personally  I would choose LG over Samsung and, in this case,  hands down  tp being an OLED

BTW As @Chodleysays LG makes the OLED panels for others including my Panasonic

Samsung do have their own OLEDs now, in their QD-OLED line.

Not a problem.

I don't think OLED burn in is as big a problem as it was & the main DOGs(digital online Graphics) have been muted & there are plenty of breaks without them anyway.

I don't watch football or Cricket but watch F1 in HDR & often long periods of Golf (especially the full days of Solheim & Ryder Cups which were also on the HDR channel albeit upscaled from HD)

Not had any. I don't baby mine but I don't leave it paused for hours either. think some early LGs suffered from it but they were very good at replacing panels.

Mine's not an OLED  @Tom+Shinkwin so don't have any screen burn issues but I do watch a lot of sport mainly F1

I don't necessarily leave it on pause for hours  on end but on the odd occasion I do pause turning off the screen is a useful feature

I tend to use the screen  off  feature when listening to music via the Sky Q box as the Album Art is static same goes if listening to music via the Fire TV stick

I'm ready for an upgrade but nothing wrong with the Sky Q experience on my current tv as yet.

I have an LG G3 and I've not noticed any dimming with the panel but it has the new MLA technology now so diverts the brightness back out of the screen so you don't lose it.

Not surprised. The G3 can hit close to 1500 nits in small areas

apparently the 83" doesn't have the MLA layer, if the OP was going BIG.

Can't find info for the LG49UH77OV but the UH7700 (maybe same era / tech?) can only do about 500.

Re: TV for HDR sky q

@Chodley @Dazzasky @Dazzasky @best+of+the+best @nigea99 , yes that's the tv I currently have , not suprised to see mine only hits around 500 , re the question about size I can only go to 50" max so , that's why I have narrowed it down to the 48 LGc3 oled and Samsung 50 QNc mini led ,as I watch a lot of footy I was excited for uhd , when sky then went to HLG as well I obviously suffered due to only hitting the 500, I know I can reset the sky box to 8bit , only thing putting me off the LG oled is and I might be wrong is that it's around 800 nits (would that be enough) and the Samsung is over a 1000 I believe so I'm thinking would that be better option .

Is there a reason the 48" is only 800?(edit: ah that's the C3 not G3?) Besides, my oled is about 800 I think and it's plenty bright enough in normal lighting.

My Panasonic is around 700 nits (as I think most OLEDs were when I got mine) and is great for me, even in bright daylight .

LCDs can go brighter than OLEDs but don't quite go as dark & tend to have slightly less contrast but I haven't looked up the Specs or in depth reviews - as @Chodley noted I am not quite as up to speed with the latest TVs as I was
