Starlink Install

Hi All,

So I have decided to try out Starlink with my house Sky Q setup . I have the standard 2TB Q main box and 3 sky minis plus a Booster. All connected to my Sky Broadband router.

I asked ages ago if the Sky Router would work with the Starlink supplying the internet. ( using the WAN over ethernet setting ) . I tested this....and mixed result. The starlink router was set into modem mode..ie total passthru ...no routing / DHCP etc. I set the Sky Router to Wan over Ethernet ....and plugged it all in ...rebooted etc and waited.

After 5 mins or so I logged into the Sky router and had a look. It reported no WAN / Internet. I then tried to get to the internet on my laptop...no joy. BUT.....I ran speedtest...and I got connectivity and 200Mb speed. I then checked the connectivity section of the Sky Router and also the logs...and to cut a long story short...it is connecting on a basic level..but not getting  a WAN ip address or DNS and it isnt connecting to the Sky servers.

SO it sort of works but doesnt really.

Next step was to remove the SKy router and use my TPlink one whilst also having the Starlink router running. The idea is to have two distinct networks in the house. A 10.0.0.x net on the TPlink to supply internet to everything apart from Sky kit. The Starlink router would then supply directly ( over wifi ) the Sky Q connectivity. Thus separating the systems and hopefully adding some stability for SKy.

The TPlink was set into Wan using dynamic ethernet and plugged into the Starlink ethernet using the TPlink WAN ethernet port. BOOM worked a treat ....over 200Mb for the house internet.

I then started adding the Sky boxes to the Starlink wifi starting with the main Q box , then the booster I have and then the 3 minis ...all using the WPS button apart from the main Q box.

It all works although using Netflix as a speed test..I dont get 200Mb ..more like 60....Perhaps this is cause the boxes are connecting to the Starlink router using 2.4GHz and not 5GHz. The sky boxes have setup their own 5GHz mesh ( as they do !) and it seems to work.

The only slight snag...and I also had this when I used the TPlink DSL router instead of the Sky Broadband router a year ago, is that the main Q box ( and hence the rest ) keeps on reporting that it dropped the internet connection for a second or so and then gets it back. It cant seem to keep a permanent connection, even though it is clearly fine. THis isnt the Starlink ...as I said I used to get it with the TPlink aswell..it seems as though it only works solidly with the Sky router on Sky broadband.

Dont get me wrong...the Sky Q works ...but it isnt 100% perfect.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this slight niggle ?

Re: Starlink Install

Wish I did. I've been the same I have connection in the Q 2tb for a while then go check the other box in my bedroom and nothing. I set it all up again and it works for a while but then again no network but upstairs is ok.

I check my router logs and its been creating multiple ip's one after the other upto 20 at times. I've reserved a IP but then the upstairs box will just not connect!

I've been running upstairs downstairs for days lol. Unfortunately I couldn't get it stable (I use starlink in bypass on a Eero 6 network) so I've had to keep my slow copper line active for my landline and just sky. Everything else uses Starlink.

I said in another post I don't think latency or geo fence is the issue here I think its sky's bad Q box networking handling. I'm presuming Sky glass is ok as my Netflix, Prime and other streaming services are fine on Starlink?
