When switching on it occasionally won't come on without switching off at plug
also occasionally while watching a program it will just loose connection and again needs switching off at plug

Factory reset might help. You'll lose all your recordings. I would go through the box troubleshooter on sky.com until it gives up and gets you sent a replacement box. Keep the viewing card! and swap power cables along with the boxes, there are two different types of those.
