Sky Q multi-room box admin charge

Hi all,

I’ve been a proud Sky Platinum customer and a loyal Sky Q & Multiscreen user since the platform launched in 2016. My original box—delivered nearly a decade ago—is still going strong without a single hiccup. That kind of reliability really deserves some credit.

Yesterday, I contacted Sky via chat to request an additional Multiscreen box. While I was pleased to hear the monthly cost would remain the same, I was disappointed to find they wouldn’t budge on the £50 admin fee. Considering my long-term commitment—and the fact I’ve paid out well over a thousand pounds in rental fees for a single box—I was hoping for a little flexibility.

Has anyone here managed to get this fee waived? My contract renewal is coming up next month, and I'm seriously considering whether it’s time to look into alternatives like Sky Stream. I'd really value any advice or firsthand experiences.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Sky Q multi-room box admin charge

Thanks again for your thoughtful reply — it's truly appreciated. I completely agree that there's not much incentive for Sky to offer anything, but when I first signed up for Multiroom nearly a decade ago (and I'm still using the same box!), I wasn’t made aware that the “Whole Home” package — or whatever it was called back then — came at a fixed price, regardless of the cost or number of boxes.

You can imagine my profound annoyance — courtesy of Daniel0210, Thanks Daniel I may well have gone to my grave not aware of this 👍 — upon discovering this nearly ten years after I'd been unknowingly paying thousands for the privilege. Meanwhile, I’ve been making do with a 13-year-old “dumb” TV hooked up to a non-WiFi Freesat recorder of the same age, just to watch a bit of telly in the bedroom. All the while, I could’ve just installed another box!

Some would say “there’s no fool like an old fool,” or perhaps Sky simply missed a golden opportunity to keep a loyal customer satisfied. Either way, I hope you’ll forgive my slightly belligerent tone — a product of long-standing frustration, admittedly partly of my own making.

I’m expecting a call back from Sky next week to discuss getting another Multiroom box, or possibly switching to Sky Stream — maybe even Sky Air with two pucks. Fingers crossed!

@Anonymous I don't usually see much movement by Sky on admin fees. If you have Q I would suggest you really research Stream before making the decision to switch. There are pros and cons to both systems.

For me, I can only have Glass in my rental property and though I do like it a lot, if I had an equal choice I would pick Q every time. I think Q is by far the best platform Sky has made.

You could maybe submit a Complaint to Sky regarding the admin fee using the Complaints option in the forum footer and see if there's any movement? Must be worth a try?

@Anonymous
These charges are quite normal. Each mini box which is loaned to you may be subject to a one off upfront charge but you only need one Sky Q monthly Multiscreen subscription.

Hi @Anonymous

Normally the admin charge for the first mini is sometimes waived as Sky have the incentive as they also get the monthly Multiscreen subscription.

However with additional minis there is no such incentive for Sky to waive the fee.
