Sky Q is now clearly old tech... whats the alternative that gives me recording
So I've noticed since upgrading my broadband router that my Sky Q box loses internet connection and I am constantly having to manually reset it and enter the broadband password. This issue is happening a couple of times a month and also if we have a power cut, the Q box won't automatically re-connect. It's becomming a real pain.
After chatting to an on-line engineer, he indicated that our broadband was much more advanced than the Sky Q tech. (we are on wifi 6 and getting ver 900mbps in our living room).
I asked what the alternatives were and he referred to Glass. However you cannot record on glass and the ability to record programmes is essential for me. Catch up option doesn't cover all programmes.
I'm paying good money for an antiquated service that for me, is no longer fit for purpose.
Has anyone heard if the hardware boxes for Sky Q is going to get updated?

Re: Sky Q is now clearly old tech... whats the alternative that gives me recording
Sky Q was designed and built under the old Sky administration before Comcast took over. It is now about 10 years old and will not be updated or replaced. The future is streaming and recording is becoming a thing of the past. The days of the hard drive based PVR are numbered.
It may sound scary but it's actually quite easy to adapt to a fully streamed TV service, be it from Sky or otherwise. The catch up services and programme re-start facilities baked into many streamers work extremely well.

Sky Q in now 9 years old. Owners Comcast are focused on Streaming and it's very unlikely there'll be any major changes to Sky Q which will only be 'a thing' until the end on the decade.

You want a good stable internet connection and recording ala Q then use cables. I wouldn't call Q antiquated but its wifi was built in a proprietary way for problems that no longer exist.

Nope, not a chance, and recording to a local hard drive is going to disappear because the content creators and distribution channels want to get control back again after the temporary anomaly of the VCR/DVR era.

@GeorgioScorchio I am guessing you have the newer Sky max router the white one to connect your Q box to this router you need to treat the router as a third party router and set it up by using the ssid and wifi password and not use the wps button
I may be a Sky Superuser but I am still just a Sky customer

Re: Sky Q is now clearly old tech... whats the alternative that gives me recording
I would not go for Glass - high priced low specs TV - better to get your own TV and pair with Sky Stream.
I switched from Q last year and do miss some of the functions and the smoothness of the system. But am used to Stream now
and the playlists are for me the same as recording - just need wifi connection and a good one at that to access saved content.
Stream interface is really good - you might need to dig around more to find what you want but it works pretty well. Im on 1gig virgin and notice no lag or very little. Forget recording to harddrives though - those days are numbered. Sky Q will soon enough be a relic from the distant past when Sat TV was the in thing. It was a superb product for its time - but now its days are numbered.
