Hi @jcl186

Sky Q can be used with 3rd Party (non Sky) broadband suppliers. Main difference with non Sky Broadband is that when using WiFi,  is that the the Main Q box can only be connected to the router 2.4 Ghz WiFi.

Also minis when using WiFi must be connected by WPS to the main Q box and cannot connect to the router directly.

If your minis were previously connected to a Sky Q router and it is a lot further away from the main Q box then it is from the router then you may need a Q WiFi booster.

It should work. It may need a little work to reconnect the mini to the main.

Are you with sky broadband now and switching away? If yes there may be some work, if not then there shouldn't be any real issues other than maybe some reconnecting the boxes.

I have Virgin broadband and never had any issues connecting.

Re: Sky Q mini on a different broadband provider

Thanks for your tips in this post. I have had a torrid time with Sky broadband and am thinking of changing suppllier when the time comes. My Sky Q box is connected by ethernet as is one of the mini Q's. I have an Orbi RBR 750 (with two satellites) WiFi 6 mesh system (in storage) which I tried to get working when we first moved in but Sky did not like me using that and wouldnt help unless I used their router. I am going to have another go at using this as the Sky system is truly awful and hardly a day goes by without a connection/network issue even though the 500mbs coming into the house is rock solid. Most frustrating so any further do's or don'ts when I try the Orbi system again would be appreciated

@calheal Q is a decade old and was designed well before any mesh network was available at home.

Your broadband speed is irrelevant as it doesn't use it between boxes.  Q to Q utilises its own 5GHz connectivity and is unlikely to use your own mesh without disconnecting.  It may work if you can connect all Q boxes to a node via Ethernet but may causes network issues even then.

If you can't get it working due to range then you can as Sky for extenders.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Re: Sky Q mini on a different broadband provider

Thanks for that....really helpful. If I turn the WiFi off on the mini Q do you know if that impacts on connectivity between the mini Q and the main Sky Q box ? Secondly am planning on just trying the Orbi router without the satellites so assume that negates it being a "mesh" system ?
