The comparision to ebooks isn't quite the same though, it would be should the actual book publishers decide to stop publishing physical books and only publish via ebooks, which is essentially what the TV/Film production companies and rights owners have decided to do. Also, the markets are completely different, and the TV companies have pretty much always relied on advertising revenue to survive, and the TV advertising market is practically dead now, which is going to make it extremely difficult for TV to go back to how it was if it wanted to.

The reason books and music can work as a mixture of digital and physical media, is because those industries can make both digital and physical profitable, but once the TV streaming genie came out of the bottle, the TV companies themselves have practically killed off their traditional method of broadcasting and can in no way revert back as the advertisers have found newer and more cost efficient ways to reach their target audience.

Since Sky Q is not being sold anymore, can it be called a legacy platform? Also, what do you think, is Sky right to "pull the plug" on Sky Q? Sky's contract with SES (the owner of the satellites) ends in 2029.

As per @GD1 , you can still order Sky Q,  but the transition to streaming only (from a Sky perspective), has clearly started. 

Personally, I do think Sky Q is a legacy product, mainly because I don't expect there to be any new hardware versions released, software updates will be minimal and new features and services are already designed around SoIP (Sky over IP) products, not satellite delivery (or a hybrid).

The same happened to Sky+ when Sky Q was released, which was 10 years ago next month..

Sky don't really have any choice but to "pull the plug" on Sky Q because the satellites that Sky lease transponders on are reaching the end of their service official lives in 2030/31. SES don't have any plans to replace them.

Although they would presumably at least consider it if Sky Group (Comcast) were to commit to another decade or two of data transit: Astra 1P went up in 2024.  That location does serve many times more households in mainland Europe than the potential (and shrinking) market in UK & RoI though.

I take your point, but to be fair, my Sky+HD system is rock solid and fine for all my needs. I'm moving across to SkyQ now (booked for next week) simply because the withdrawal of it from online ordering made me reconsider which system I'd rather be "stuck" on, if there were to be any future changes or restrictions in ordering SkyQ. Of course, with satellites still fully functional and UK Internet not being anything like universal, many customers will want/prefer to record satellite broadcasts, and that customerbase isn't going to just disappear overnight.

"Legacy" in computing terms normally mean a previous or outdated system. But if that "previous" system is still clearly being sold in parallel with the newer system, it's not really previous, and it's certainly not outdated when you consider it supports most modern standards (HDR10, HLG and Dolby Atmos-over-DD+ audio) and offers access to more content than the replacement. Also when the previous-previous system (I mean Sky+HD here) is still in active use and being billed, then those lines become blurred, and each person can put their own spin on the word "legacy". I see that discussion as interesting, but fruitless IMHO.

Having only one box per household capable of UHD output (and an overall limit of three boxes in simultaneous use, two of which cannot support the standards you mention) is now a significant weakpoint of the platform, and does reflect its vintage.
