Sky Q a setup and Virginmedia problem

Hope someone can help please.

I have a Sky Q setup with one main Sky Q box and 2 minis, all connected via ethernet to the main network. The internet for the entire house is run via a Google Wifi mesh system which works OK. I have had this setup for about 7-8 years without any issues.

Over the last few weeks, I have started to have significant intermittent issues with reception on the minis. I initially thought this was a problem with the mini reception, but after several network resets and reactivations, the problem persists. Sky have sent an engineer round who has replaced my main Sky Q box (as it's one of the earlier ones) to try to solve the problem, but this hasn't helped.

What I have noticed though after much digging is that the Sky Q main box keeps dropping connection for 5-10 seconds ever so often, and whenever that happens the Sky minis don't get any reception. When this happens, I see that the tick moves into an x, and then within 5-10secs, changes back into a tick. And this keeps happening ever so often. As I mentioned earlier, the main box has been changed, as has the network gear (switch, ethernet cables, etc) but nothing seems to help.

Grateful for any suggestions or help to fix this. Never experienced this before!

I should have mentioned - my broadband provider is Virgin Media and I have a Hub 4.

The 1st thing that jumps out is that you're running 2 mesh systems, Google and Sky (for the minis).  I tried out the BT Disc set-up last year, and it definitely allowed signal into places previously "in the dark" but this 2nd mesh played absolute havoc with the one in place between the minis and the main Q box - pretty much disabled the minis vision of the main Q even being there.  Once I disabled the BT disc, voila!

Re: Sky Q a setup and Virginmedia problem

Many thanks @Ecosse

I absolutely get the point, but I haven't had any issue with this setup for more than 7 years. So why now ? Nothing changed, apart from a recent Virginmedia router update, but I am not sure whether that has anything to do with this.

Thanks again!

Hi @faithsprings

Have you turned off all Q box WiFi.

Best to do this as follows

When all boxes are connected by Ethernet you can then switch off all Q box WiFi.

Start with main Q box and first carry out a Network reset with the Ethernet connected.
Network Reset found in Q box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Select connect wired to non Sky Router . Do not carry out any WPS and just wait for the box to connect. It may take a couple of minutes. If it does not connect there is an issue with the Ethernet connection.
As soon as it connects go into the Q box hidden menu and turn off WiFi.

To enter hidden menu press Home and navigate down to Settings but do not select Settings.
With Settings highlighted press 0 0 1 Select.
Go to Network to turn off both bands of WiFi. Confirm before exit.

Repeat the network reset on any minis in the Mini Home menu with the Ethernet connected. Again do not do any WPS and just wait for it to connect.
Once it is connected go into the mini hidden menu (same procedure as above) and turn off both bands of WiFi. Confirm before exit.

Re: Sky Q a setup and Virginmedia problem

I have just started having issues similarly but on Vodafone broadband. I had main Sky Q via ethernet and two mini boxes wifi. Was working fine then no longer. Keeps dropping, losing connection then reconnecting. Any suggested settings?

Thanks @oldfella

I have tried this also, and it hasn't resolved the issue. I am not quite sure what else to do!

Nothing Changed <>Virgin Media Router update.

Make sure you are using ethernet for your mini's.  I believe others have reported the wifi being turned back on randomly.  We have virgin broadband, EERO Wifi and Sky Q connected by wire to 2 minis.  Before we wired them and turned off WiFi there would be occaisional drop outs

SONOS soundbar, Virgin V6 x2 , Superhub 3 in modem mode, Eero pro x 2 and 3 x Eero

Re: Sky Q a setup and Virginmedia problem

I'm having same issue, sky q mini cutting out constantly, has been fine for months. Main box connected via ethernet but the sky mini is too far so has to work via wifi. Cannot figure out why the sudden change
