Sky HDR issues when using auto setting on Sony Bravia

Hi

 

Watched footie on TNT Sports last night, so decided to check HDR was working.  

( I go into TV settings to check whether HDR being displayed.) 

 

Didnt get the HDR indicator, so checked settings on TV. These were on auto. Changed to HLG and HDR kicked in. 

I thought Sony would be able to detect source as Sky and adapt HDR setting accordingly?  Not a game changer as everything watched on Sony is via Q. Never watch thru TV, no Firestick plugged in etc.

 

Just wondered if any other Sony users had experienced this issue?

 

We have UHD subscription, HDR box etc.

It should. Are you sure the box was outputting 10bit colour? Manually forcing HLG on an SDR (8bit) picture can look like an improvement because the contrast ratio increases but it's not accurate.

Hi

 

I'm pretty sure Sky box was set to 10 bit, but will check.  I'll change back to auto HDR on the TV and see if it happens again.

Does also depend on the vintage of the television and its firmware: Sony has been using Bravia as a badge since 2005.

Hi @hapazard2   There are two crucial bits of information missing. 1. The model number of your TV (it will start with KD- or XR-). 2. The hardware version of your Sky Q box (it will start with 32B). Sony Bravia is simply a generic term. I assume that you don't mean a half ton CRT from the last century.

Yeah but if it has HDR support (and the opening post suggests it does) it will be more recent

 

Knowing the model number would certainly be useful.

Hi All

 

Thanks for your help. TV is KD49XF9005. Think it's 2019. Only LED, not OLED, but definitely HDR capacity. Sky Q box is 32B1O7/2 Tb. Again, definitely is hdr enabled.

Hi @hapazard2   Short high speed HDMI cable? Is the HDMI port on the KD-49XF9005 (2018) set to Enhanced (probably only HDMI 2 & 3, at least it was on my old XE9305).
