SKY Q Box Dimensions

Has the new SKY Q box got smaller?

Our builder who has just constructed our media wall says our SKY Q box is too big, he thought we had the new SKY Q box which is smaller?
Is there a newer more compact version?  Have they changed size over the years? - Think we got our box in 2019.

And is there an easy way of upgrading to the new smaller box if it exists?

There is no new Sky Q box. Your builder is perhaps thinking of the Sky Stream puck which is a lot smaller but is an entirely different system which uses your broadband connection to receive programmes rather than a satellite dish.

You can switch from Q to Stream, but it is by no means an upgrade - it is a different service. Not all channels are available, it doesn't record, and it relies entirely on fast and stable broadband, so do make sure you research it fully before deciding on a switch.

@MJO

I got my v1 Sky Q box in November 2019.

Sky Q box dimensions:

Sky Q 2TB v1 (32BO):

345mm wide x 210mm deep x 35mm high

Sky Q 2TB v2 (32B1):

345mm wide x 210mm deep x 43mm high

Not sure on the dimensions for the v3. Obviously a mini box is smaller.

Perhaps he's thinking of mini boxes?  (Or stream etc.)

The main Q boxes are basically the same size - either 330/345mm wide, between 35 and 43mm tall.  (All 210mm deep)

I'd suggest they were almost certainly thinking of the Stream puck (released in 2021/22) which would very much make it their potentially rather expensive mistake...

As noted in comments above a Q Mini box (from 2016) is considerably smaller than a main Q box (the clue is in the name) but a Mini can't output UHD and so would be an unusual choice for a bespoke media wall.

Re: SKY Q Box Dimensions

Thank you all for your responses, think there was confusion with this.
So while the space for the box was not wide enough, it had decent height, so we've currently compromised by standing the box on its side.... hopefully this works long term.

Hmmm. Not sure anyone would recommend you do that. Sky Q boxes are designed to be kept flat so that heat can dissipate upwards. The fan on the underside won't be able to draw air up either.

You may get issues long term, so be prepared for the odd hard drive failure at some point.

Hi @MJO

If this is your main Q box be aware of providing adequate ventilation.

The Q box is designed to be positioned flat on its base and excess heat rises and is allowed to dissipate upwards through the top surface.

Mounting it on its side could cause issues with heat rising through the internal circuit boards.

Re: SKY Q Box Dimensions

I say on it's side, it is more of a slant like ' / '
The width of the gap is probably 1 -1.5cm too small for it lay flat and have wires plugged in.
So its basically on a diagonal slant, haven't turned it on yet though as Media wall plaster is still drying out, then painting and final bits and pieces

@MJO personally I'd be getting the builder back to sort their mistake and refusing to pay them until they fix it. If they have used the wrong dimensions then they need to sort it and not have you trying to fit a box that needs plenty of ventilation into a hole that's obviously not big enough for it and could cause damage to it.
