Problem using HDMI extender with Sky Q

I have just had an upgrade to Sky Q from Sky+ HD. My previous setup involved using Excelvan HDMI extenders over ethernet cabling in my flat and this allowed me to watch TV in two other rooms and change the channels in those rooms. Sky have given me one mini box so I don't need to worry about that room but in the other room the Excelvan extender ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B072V4VYYQ/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) is no longer working so I am trying to work out why not. Perhaps it can't cope with the Sky Q signal? The extender leaflet states it has video support for up to 1080p @60 and video bandwidth 165Mhz [4.95Gbps] so does this cover Sky Q or not?

Another possibility is using my old Sky+ HD box which now only has one aerial feed into the back as a Freesat box if this is possible. The problem here is I can no longer get a signal over the extender on this either so I'm wondering does the upgrade to Sky Q prevent me doing this now? The satellite cable was connected to input 1 on the HD box and I tried connecting to input 2 but no luck with that either.

Perhaps I need to upgrade the HDMI extender to another one?

If you have a mini and multiscreen

sub then why not ask sky for another mini?  (There may be a one off admin charge but no increase in sub)

Hi,

Thanks but I don't have a multiscreen subscription and don't really need one I'm trying to find a cheaper alternative.

Hi @basilfaulty

You said Sky have given you  a mini.

Afraid you will not be able to use this without the Monthly Multiscreen subscription.

Edit

Regarding your HDMI extenders do they support HDCP 2.2?

As above, if you have a working mini then you have a multiroom sub...  (One sub will cover up to 4 mini's)

Re: Problem using HDMI extender with Sky Q

My subscription charges me £5 extra per month for the multiscreen. I didn't ask Sky for Sky Q they phoned me and made me an offer I couldn't refuse I suppose! I did ask about extra mini boxes but was told I could only get one for this price.

I'm not sure what the output of the Sky Q box is set to. Where can I find that?

The extender manual says it supports HDCP compliant devices but no mention of 2.2. I bought this in 2017. the extender has an equalizer switch with 7 different settings and it says if you see flickering which I am seeing on the setting used previously but none of the other settings seems to make it any better.

Hi @basilfaulty

Q box output resolution is in Home - Settings - Setup - Audio visual

Re: Problem using HDMI extender with Sky Q

Hi,

The box is set to 1080p HD when the engineer first had the box working the extender was working so maybe it was set to 1080i HD at that time and then he changed it to 1080p? I could try setting it to 1080i and see if that works.

as you have multi screen then there's nothing stopping you adding another mini - but will likely be a £50 admin charge for it.

Yeah I would just get another mini

and you can use 4k on the main box then

and have different things on each screen if that matters to you

Re: Problem using HDMI extender with Sky Q

The solution I have come up with now that I have found out that my old Sky+ HD box still works as a Freesat box (with one connection to the satellite dish) and still sends a signal over the HDMI extender is to use that for the TV in the bedroom. This gets me CNN which is the last thing I watch at night. I also have Freeview and catchup TV apps on all my TVs as well so one mini box will suffice for now.

I may call Sky and see if they'll give me a second mini box but not if they want to charge me more for it

Zero chance they will give you it for free, I would save your time on the call 😁

Indeed, but it is a one-off cost.
