Please help this is stressing me out
Hi guys please can someone help
me as I am pulling my hair out.
i have sky q 2tb main box and 4 mini boxes
3in the house and 1 down my man shed approx 15 m away.
if I disconnect the 1 in the man shed the main box and 3 minis in the house work fine.
as soon as I plug the 1 in from the man shed the main box losses internet connection.
which throws them all off again.
is there a solution to this.
the mini in my man shed has an Ethernet from the back of the main sky q box down to the mini in shed which use to work.
I have now run an Ethernet cable from the router into the shed with a sky booster box but still cuts the internet on main box.
please can someone help as I've tried all options
many thanks Jason

Re: Please help this is stressing me out
To address the problem you are experiencing with your Sky Q system, we need to break down the situation step by step. You have a main Sky Q 2TB box and four mini boxes, with one of those mini boxes located in your man shed approximately 15 meters away. The issue arises when you connect the mini box in the shed; it causes the main box to lose its internet connection, which subsequently affects all other mini boxes.
1. Understanding Network Configuration
The Sky Q system operates on a mesh network that allows multiple devices to communicate wirelessly. Each mini box relies on a stable connection to the main box for streaming content and accessing the internet. When you introduce an additional Ethernet connection from the router to the mini box in your shed, it may be causing conflicts within your network setup.
2. Possible Causes of Internet Loss
Several factors could lead to this issue:
IP Address Conflicts: If both the main Sky Q box and the mini box in your shed are trying to use the same IP address, it can cause connectivity issues.
Network Overload: Adding another device (the mini box in your shed) may overload your network if bandwidth is insufficient or if there are too many devices connected simultaneously.
Signal Interference: The distance and potential physical barriers between devices can affect signal strength and quality.
Configuration Errors: Incorrect settings on either the main box or any of the mini boxes could lead to connectivity problems.
3. Troubleshooting Steps
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take:
Check IP Address Settings: Ensure that each device has a unique IP address. You can do this by accessing your router’s settings through its web interface (usually found at 192.168.1.1 or similar). Look for connected devices and their assigned IP addresses.
Reset Devices: Power cycle all devices involved—unplug them for about 30 seconds before plugging them back in. This can help refresh connections and resolve temporary glitches.
Reconfigure Network Settings:
- Disconnect all devices from power.
- Start with only the main Sky Q box connected to power.
- Once it is fully operational, add one mini box at a time, ensuring each connects properly before adding another.
Use Ethernet Directly from Router: Since you’ve already run an Ethernet cable from your router into the shed, ensure that this cable is functioning correctly by testing it with another device (like a laptop). Connect this directly to the mini box instead of using any boosters initially.
Check for Firmware Updates: Make sure that all Sky Q boxes (main and minis) have up-to-date firmware installed. Sometimes connectivity issues arise due to outdated software.
4. Consider Alternative Solutions
If after following these steps you still experience issues, consider these alternatives:
Wi-Fi Extender/Booster Placement: Ensure that any Wi-Fi extenders or boosters are optimally placed between your router and where they need coverage (in this case, near or inside your man shed).
Ethernet over Powerline Adapters: If running long Ethernet cables is impractical, consider using powerline adapters that utilize existing electrical wiring in your home to extend internet access without needing new cabling.
Conclusion
By systematically diagnosing and addressing each potential cause of connectivity loss when connecting your man shed’s mini box, you should be able to restore functionality across all devices in your Sky Q network setup.

Re: Please help this is stressing me out
What happens if
1) you swap one of the minis in the house with the one in the shed
2) you have just the one in the shed connected AND then add the ones in the house one by one
3) bring the one in the shed into the house and connect by a short LAN cable.
The above may help to determine if there is an issue with a box or cable.

Re: Please help this is stressing me out
The mini needs an internet connection. I think the Q tries to use it as a route to the internet when you have that point to point connection. Can you put a switch in between the Q end of that ethernet cable and then also connect that switch to the router?

Re: Please help this is stressing me out
After reading through all the posts I think I know what has happened (hopefully!) Am I correct in thinking that your main sky Q box is connected to the internet (router) by Wifi? (And the 3 minis in the house are also connected by WiFi ) If so what I think has happened is when you connect a lan cable to your sky Q box is that the Q's WiFi connection is disabled to the internet (router) because the Q box prioritises a wired connection to the internet over a WiFi connection So when you plug in a cable it is expecting a wired internet connection (so turns off WiFi internet) but since the cable is only going to a mini it won't "find" the internet.(I believe it will still connect to the mini boxes because that uses it own separate mesh WiFi network) So my thought is that you need to connect the outside mini to your internet router directly - not to the Q box - it will act as a network switch (as long as it has a least 2 lan ports - most have 4/5) You have a few options1) Connect the outside mini with your 15 metre cable. (If you have a suitable tv/monitor spare you can test this by setting up the outside mini and tv next to the router and connect a small lab cable to the router so you can see if it works?)2) Use a pair of power line adapters to connect the router to the mini (you can get ones which have built in to plug sockets. ) My advice would be to get these from Amazon as you can return easily if needed.
