No Satellite Signal

I just wonder whether anyone can help.

I live in a development. We have three communal Sky dishes serving the blocks and maisonettes.

Over the last month, on at least four occasions, when I turn my television on, a message comes up. 'No Satellite Signal'

I then turn my television and Sky Q box off at the wall. I wait for a few minutes, turn everything back on, the Sky Q box reboots and all is back to normal.  When every thing is working  Signal Strength is either 80 or 90. Signal Quality is 90.

When  I am not watching television I turn my television off at the wall but I always keep my Sky Q box on stand by.

Do we think this is a problem with my Sky Q box or the Sky commmunal dish. I do not know any other residents who have Sky tv who use this particular dish so I can not check with them

Checked all the cables are secure?

@middlesex1993

Might be worth contacting your Building Management Company. They should know which residents are supplied by which communal dish and likewise should be aware of any other reported issues.

Re: No Satellite Signal

I do not think the management company will know which flat is connected to the Sky communal dish. I do not think many residents have Sky tv. All the cables at the back of my television and Sky Q box seem to be okay.

I just wonder from what I have described whether posters think it is more likely to be a fault with the Sky communal dish or a fault with my Sky Q box.

By the way. I have now had my television on for three hours and everything is now okay. When I lose the satellite signal like today, it seems to only happen when I turn the television on for the first time in a day and it does not seem to happen when I am in the middle of watching a programme.

Really not sure what is likely to be the cause here - my totally uninformed guess maybe that something in the distribution system is possibly falling asleep or similar

I will tag our kind expert @Godfrey who is our expert with communal systems

Just out of interest do you have a small power 'inserter'  connected to one of the satellite connections

Re: No Satellite Signal

nigea99 Daniel0210 and Chodley.

Thank you all for your replies.
nigea99. Sadly I have no idea as I am hopeless with modern technology.

As I say. The issue only seems to happen when I turn the television on for the first time in a day and take the Sky Q box out of standby mode.

I would stress it only has happened about four times in the last month.

Please let me know once you have heard back from the expert.

You will know when he does. He tagged him to draw his attention to this thread 😉

We do not even know if your flat is having to use a Unitron dCSS-422 Sky Q Plug-In adaptor to update an old legacy communal Universal LNB multiswitch, or a modern communal dSCR multiswitch.

But, checking if Sky had thought it necessary to install a Power Inserter in your flat, to remotely power their Unitron dCSS-422 distribution adaptor, if power had not been available in the communal Integrated Reception System distribution cabinet which feeds your flat, was certainly a logical first step.

If your Sky Q receiver is presently configured to be using the default 'ECO' standby mode, it might be worth trying the 'NONE' standby mode.

Godfrey.

Godfrey

Sadly that reply was far too technical for me and I am completely lost.

It has occurred to me you are the expert joining in with this thread after being contacted by nigea99  and thank you for that.

Do you think it is likely to be the Sky Communal dish or my Sky Q box

@middlesex1993   Alas this type of problem could either be your Sky Q receiver or your communal IRS distribution system.

I think the quickest analysis of this fault would be achieved if you contacted Sky and asked if one of their specialist Multiple Development Unit (MDU) trained engineers could be scheduled to investigate, which should quickly establish if it is the Sky Q receiver, or a fault in the communal IRS installation which would require the Landlord's agent to contact the specialist engineer who has been contracted to maintain their communal IRS installation.

Re: No Satellite Signal

I have a communal Sky dish.

This evening we had heavy rain for about 30 minutes and I lost my satellite  signal.

Every thing now back to normal.

How heavy should the rain be to lose your  Sky signal  and is this normal,

I was still able to watch my television through the communal tv aerial as opposed to the communal  Sky dish.

When I lived in a house I rarely lost my satellite signal even in heavy rain.

Hi @middlesex1993

It is normal in heavy rain or even heavy cloud.

Also briefly lost signal during recording of Corrie here.

Thanks for that swift reply.

I assume that a communal tv aerial is less affected by heavy rain compared to a Sky communal  dish.

As I said. When I lost my satellite tv signal for a short time this evening  due to the heavy rain, I was then still able to watch television through the communal tv aerial

Tv signals have to go about 50 miles

satellite signals at least 22,000 miles

It makes a difference. That's before the different frequencies used and signal strength at origin are taken into effect. It's all obviously much more complex than just distance.

Chodley

Thanks for  that. I now know two

other people I have spoken to lost their satellite signal this evening for a short period due to the heavy rain.

Every thing is now back  to normal.
