Moving House

Hi,

I was just wondering if I could ask some advice please. I'm moving house (new build), and I've been told the Communications Box will be under the stairs, which is where the BT box and Cat5E point will go) and there will be a media plate in the living room near the TV.

From my understanding (unless I'm getting it wrong) this means the BT Openreach modem will be under the stairs, whereas in my current house it is in the living room near the TV and I have an ethernet cable going from the modem to the router, and from the router to the Sky Q box.

It says online it is recommended to have an ethernet cable going from the router to the Sky Q box for the best internet connection, but if the Openreach modem is under the stairs, doesn't that mean the router will have to go there and then I won't be able to connect an ethernet cable from the router to the Sky Q box?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @SpecialAppearance

If you say there is an Ethernet point under the stairs and a media plate in the Living room next to theTV.

If this is the case then you need to make sure that the media plate is a direct Ethernet connection to the Ethernet point under the stairs.

As your main Q box will be located at the TV then this should give Ethernet between router and Q box

Re: Moving House

Thank you! So does that basically mean in laymans terms that is long as it does run between them then if there is an ethernet point in the media plate in the living room then the ethernet point from the Sky Q box can be plugged in there and will run to the modem/Openreach point under the stairs?

Thanks again!

Yes @SpecialAppearance

But you need to makesure that the media plate does have an Ethernet connection that is fully connected to the Ethernet socket under the stairs.

@SpecialAppearance

Also, will you be having (and are you allowed to have) your own dish or is there a central communal dish system?

Re: Moving House

Thanks both!

I'm not sure about the dish, I wasn't sure if they were still in use! Or is it only for Sky Stream/Sky Glass that you don't need a dish?

Sky Q receives live TV via satellite and requires a dish. Many new build developments don't allow them.

Re: Moving House

Oh ok, thanks. So what are my options if they don't allow me to have a dish? I have a contract for Sky Signature, with a Sky Q box. Would Sky let me replace it with a Sky Stream box? Thanks in advance.

Yes @SpecialAppearance

I'm sure there would be no issue to transfer to Sky Stream
