Maximum 16% disk space

We have had recurring problems with our 2 mini-boxes over a number of years: losing connectivity, freezing picture etc.

A Sky tech support employee today said that this is because we were using more than 16% of the capacity of the hard disk on the Sky Q box. We cleared it down to about 5% and will see if it makes a difference.

But my question is: has anyone encountered this reason for poor performance before; and what is the remaining 84% storage for if it is not for recording programmes?!

Hi @scrambler60

What you were told is not correct.   The Q box will handle the disk space and carry out Housekeeping if its usage starts getting too high.

hi @scrambler60

I think the Tech you spoke to needs to go on some training !!! What a load of nonsense

Iam assuming they are connevted via wifi - is your home wifi SKY or 3rd party ?

All mini pictures are sent from the main Q, they are cached on the hard drive and sent.

Using more than 16% as the issue is a load of rubbish.  I don't think mine has ever been under that - working perfectly at 42% right now.

if you are having issues then it will either be the quality of the connection between boxes or the hard drive is struggling to provide data fast enough to supply the mini's.  This could indicate an issue with the hard disk.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Re: Maximum 16% disk space

Thanks to everyone for prompt replies. I thought it all seemed somewhat strange!

The broadband is not Sky, but everything else which depends on it works fine. This has been such a long running issue that my heart sinks at the thought of another hour on the phone trying different solutions, but I guess I shall have to try.

Hi @scrambler60

First try rebooting the main Q box and then when this is completely back up and running reboot the minis.  (starting with the mini nearest to the main Q box)
To reboot press Standby on your Sky Q remote (if the box responds to the remote), and then switch off and unplug at the mains.
Wait at least 30 secs and then Plug back in and switch your Sky Q box back on at the mains.
Wait for the on screen instructions to disappear and the front led to turn Amber. Then wait for 30 secs before you press Home on your Sky Q remote or if this is not working press the standby button on the front of the Q box (Amber led)

note: some features may take up to 5 minutes to return.

Reboot the minis as above.
If the mini still does not connect try a Network Reset on the mini.
Network Reset found in mini Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Follow instructions to WPS with main Q box.
You will be asked to press the WPS button on the main Q box (not the mini as the Network reset will start the mini WPS automatically).
.You can also use WPS on any connected mini if it is the nearest Q  device.

You need to be aware that when your home wifi is not SKY then the minis connect using a wifi Signal generated by the Main box.

I initially had problems with my mini but found moving the mini a foot or so to the side and lso turning off wifi in a nearby AV amp cured my problem - so you may find moving the minis may improve signal.

We also know that Dect cordless land phones can interfere

Seriously I would raise an official complaint about that call. Treating a customer like that is a disciplinary in my book, whether intentional or not.

I would try powerline adapters between your minis and the Q. It's the only way I got the minis to work consistently.
