Our screen is stuck on Updating Software Step 1 of 2. We have followed the trouble shooting steps twice and cannot get it past this point.

I am in the same position. I'm not very happy as it is 3 days before Christmas and I have no box. I have had sky for just under a year and have experienced a number of problems.
I am considering whether changing to sky was the right thing.

Indeed, annoying but they can fail at any time. Make sure you report it to Sky as they may consider a credit for the downtime once it's fixed.
