Issue with Sky Q Box and 4K

I have a LG G2 (before this had a C1 and the issue persisted there too) and there seems to be an issue with the Sky Q boxes when the resolution is set to 4K 10Bit and the box goes to sleep and fails to power back on to give a signal.

I've tried multiple HDMI cables and I had this same issue with a previous Sky Q box which had other issues hence replaced but I cannot figure out whether this a setting I am overseeing or what.

When I turn the TV on in the morning and the box is in standby mode, it will turn on and emit a solid green light but there is literally no picture output. The only way I've managed to get it to work again is to unplug the box from power and let it do a full reboot, at which point it goes back to 1080p.

Has anyone else faced this issue? Very frustrating to say the least.

Re: Issue with Sky Q Box and 4K

I am having a similar issue with LG G4 but unplugging and reconnecting the HDMI lead in the back of the Sky box works. I have found if you change the 4K setting on the Sky box to 8-bit it seems to fix this along with sound and picture split second drop outs.

I am checking mine for a couple of days and will get on to Sky and see what they suggest. Bit of a pain but I would rather leave on 8-bit then turn 10-bit on when I want to watch UHD channels.

Unfortunately the G4 was released with HDMI issues that LG tried to resolve but all they've done is introduce new ones. Hopefully a firmware will be released that will eventually sort this out.

Yes, most days and I am still rocking an LG B6 from 2016.

This is a long standing issue with LG TVs and Sky kit, although I have to be fair and say this doesn't happen with any other kit I use (Apple TV 4K, Xbox, EE TV Pro), only Sky.

It also only happens on my OLED to the main Q box, the bedroom LG (UHD LCD 43" £199 special offer from Richer Sounds), which is connected to our one and only Sky Q mini box, has never had the issue.

As @cuke has mentioned, every time LG try to fix HDMI handshake issues, they somehow make it worse!

In my experience, when I turn on Q and get the green light but nothing on screen, I simply power the box off and on again from the remote to get a picture.

Very occasionally I have to turn the TV and box off, but then on restart all is well.

Things may have changed @Simonb73 but I thought you need the box output on 10bit to get UHD HDR otherwise it is just UHD (a brighter picture which some prefer admittedly)?

Re: Issue with Sky Q Box and 4K

Thanks for the reply. Yes you're right I will have to switch to 10-bit to watch sky UHD in HDR.

All issues (sound and picture drop outs and HDMI start up) went when using 8-bit. All problems started when I got a Sky Q HDR box last year and my old LG OLED started having the HDMI start up issue but not every time. Before that HDR box I had zero issues with this. So I am assuming it is Sky. I will have a read through the thread later this afternoon. Thanks again

Re: Issue with Sky Q Box and 4K

Hi having same issue with 10 bit, it seems to have a black screen now and then for a split second and often lose sound for similar amount of time

Engineer says you wouldn't be able to notice with the picture difference between 8 and 10 Bit but I definitely think you can

I also like others have premium priced HDMI cables and have tried different inputs

if anyone manages to get this resolved please let us know

Hi @RobBunting

It is difficult to comment without the full picture (so to speak). Are you using the Sky Q supplied short HDMI lead?

The only difference between 8bit and 10 bit is the HDR stream.  Obviously with HDR the picture should be better, but programmes without HDR should be the same.

Re: Issue with Sky Q Box and 4K

Hi

Yes, I've gone back to the HDMI provided by Sky. I have 2 other hdmi inputs with other hdmi cables rigged up (all been tried with same issue)

I also have a new LG tv which has come up by others as a brand to have problems with SKY Q

My TV detects the HDR stream so when you turn it on a channel that provides it you get a logo in the top right corner of the screen like sky sports HD for example

Just a shame you can't use the tv to its full capability, especially on movies and sports

Re: Issue with Sky Q Box and 4K

Can't help to solve the problem but I have an LG C series that I was having some issues with using the supplied sky hdmi lead so upgraded to a better quality HDMI cable and no problems since.

Re: Issue with Sky Q Box and 4K

For me and my LG G4 it was the TV not the sky Q box. I've had 3 Sky Q boxes now.

The output on the Sky Q box is set to 1080i and sound is Dolby digital.

My issue went using these and resetting the TV. I did try 1080p and Dolby digital plus but it did cause issues.
I have heard that the 4K on Sky works ok once the TV has been reset but I have not tried this as I ditched the UHD on Sky. Not sure if it works on both 8-bit and 10-bit.
My TV and Sky Q box do take a few seconds to start up, maybe 15 seconds some days.
Lot of threads revived as LG did and update on 7th Feb which has caused this issue to start again. I will be resetting my TV again over the weekend so hopefully fix it.
