Is a visit essential?
Sky have quoted a three month lead time to install a new Sky Q box for me. I already have a compatible dish and cabling installed by a local company (Grade II listed 16th century cottage, so needed to be done to comply with local regs). So I don't need an engineer - it's just a case of plugging in the box. They insist that they need to visit. Is there anything I can do? Can I buy a Sky Q box from somewhere else?

You cannot buy Q boxes. They are all lent from Sky for the duration of your subscription.
Unless you can convince them to deliver a box only then you'll have to wait. There has been a significant reduction in engineers due to the shift to steaming.

@otherc you say it has a compatible dish but Sky won't know this or even if you have a compatible LNB which is the electronic bit on the arm of the dish which needs to be a wideband LNB
