I have 4 sky q boxes but cannot use three without some lost of connection

Can you tell me if I can put my sky q 2tb box through the ìnternet router so all 4 boxes work properly.  The sky person who come out to sort this problem said that because of my home being a concrete built bungalow it makes the WiFi signal has to work harder but having read on here that you can connect the box to WiFi but can it work that the main box can be switched to WiFi to make all four boxes work properly

    Cheers

hi @Jdcass

I am not quite sure what your set up is currently and what you are trying to do.

Anyway here are some points which may help

If you can connect all boxes via ethernet to your router & network, via unmanaged switches if needed  to provide extra ports/ suitable links, then this is generally the most reliable method.

After that it depends on who your home network is with as to how the minis connect

If your provider is SKY then the router, Main box & minis all share the same wifi / network  and will use each box as local hotspot - you can also mix & match wifi & ethernet connections on all boxes.

If your provider is not SKY then the minis will use a separate (closed) wifi generated by the SKY Q main box - this means location of all boxes may be more critical - also it means a slightly higher chance of interference between networks . In this case your options for ethernet & wifi are also  more restricted as any mini connected via ethernet must be connected to the main box via ethernet

Who is your provider ?

My provider is BT and my main box is connected to the router via ethernet but the mini uses the SKY Q main box wifi - I initially had connectivity issues but I found turning off wifi on a AV receiver next to the mini and moving the mini just a foot or so has led to a very stable connection.

Thus you may find just moving one of your boxes just slightly may improve connectivity - also removing sources of inteference can help (SKY Q boxes don't like being too close to the router for example)

BTW I presume you are aware that you can only use 2 of your minis at any one time for SKY content (i.e. Satellite channels/recordings) although you may be able to use more if using for streaming apps like Netflix before the others are used

Re: I have 4 sky q boxes but cannot use three without some lost of connection

Hi, thanks for the answer I have sky everything but when I connected to 4 boxes the WiFi signal is weak because if you are watching a recording you get a juttering every minute but if we disconnect one of the boxes you can use three boxes only. The sky person who came out said that a concrete bungalow makes it difficult to reach all the boxes and tried to put a booster in my hallway but couldn't as it wouldn't sit on top of the plug. I can't use the three boxes in the bedrooms at night because we need to keep the main box on to record things so I have to switch off one of the boxes at the plug so the other two boxes work. I thought if the main box worked through the WiFi by cable it would stop the problem.

I think you've misunderstood the system capacity inherent to Q since it was launched: you can have the main box plus any two of a maximum four Mini boxes at the address running.  It's simply not possible to have three Mini boxes in use simultaneously for Sky content no matter how they are connected: under some circumstances one additional Mini can be running its Netflix app without counting towards the two in use.

Note that the main box isn't 'on to record things': it's feeding the Mini boxes their data all the time, and no Mini can work without the main box being powered.

You shouldn't need to turn a Mini off at the mains though: putting it into Standby should be enough.  It's best to exit out of apps before doing so,as this seems to help the main box keep track.

Hi, yeah you would think that but the proof is if you have three boxes on then the third is on stand by one box works but if you unplug the third box two boxes work having already done it with two boxes on stand by at the time.

hi as I said the sky person told me why four boxes would not work very well because the building is made of total concrete so makes it hard to reach some boxes and having four boxes only two can be used while the main one is on but when it goes to three boxes at night one has to be unplugged so the other two can operate as they should.

@Jdcass

I don't follow what you are saying there, but no household can have three Mini boxes in use for Sky content.

And I repeat: the fundamental architecture of Q does not and has never permitted three Mini boxes to be in use for Sky content simultaneously.   Sky service to that many screens (aside from the one connected to the main Q box which is always available) requires either using at least one Sky Go device, or switching to Sky Glass/Stream.

The main Q box cannot be unplugged while having any Mini boxes still be usable.  I'm afraid the Sky person was not informing you correctly: they were giving a garbled interpretation of Mini box capability.  An address can have up to four Mini boxes present, but only two can be in use and the other two must be on Standby.

Hi @Jdcass As previously suggested click on the link Here  to read the official SKY post for watching multiple devices on SKYQ

@Jdcass The information on the link that @Quoman7 provided is correct but badly worded as it jumps from the capability of the Q box to Sky Go and it is easy to get the impression that you can use 6 boxes. However as everyone has said the maximum number of mini boxes that can be used simultaneously is 2

@Jdcass

You can only use TWO Sky Q Mini box's at the same time and then your MAIN Sky Q box on top of that.

Totally 3 viewable screens, but you most certianley CANT use more than TWO mini boxes at one time.
