I've been told that software updates are going to stop on my sky + box. I use the tv out to send the output to a tv in bedroom via coax cable and a tvout device to change the channels etc on the sky box. They want me to upgrade but I'm worried that the sky q box doesn't have the tvout function and will therefore cost me loads more, which I can't afford to do as cost of living etc

Just because software updates are going to stop, it doesn't mean your Sky+ box is going to stop working. You can carry on using it for as long as the satellite service continues or as long as your box continues functioning. Sky+ HD boxes are now legacy devices and haven't been manufactured for many years so once your box dies, due to some mechanical or electrical failure, you won't be able to get a new one from Sky. You can source one from eBay or an independent retailer, but that's all you can do if you want to continue with the Sky+ service instead of switching to Sky Q.

To put it into perspective, your Sky+HD box hasn't had a software update for a couple of years. They're just now confirming that it won't ever get one.

Given that Sky+ HD will never host apps or output a higher resolution, it's difficult to imagine what any such 'updates' could bring. EPG changes are different and Sky as a regulated EPG provider is obliged to provide those even for a legacy platform.

From memory, the last 'update' was to fix the bug that caused the clock not to change by an hour one year (can't recall if it was March or October). It would be interesting to see if such a bug would be fixed now.

Sshhh... I was subject to that update when my Sky clock was out of sync for 3 days, I have no need to find out if a future similar fault would be fixed 😂
I also got my letter today of Sky officially telling me they are abandoning the platform, and offering me a free SkyQ box. I won't be accepting as SkyQ doesn't have a simple RF output.

Wow, that looks like a fabulous solution - until I researched the price of the modulator, £200. Stll, shows it can be done and I'm grateful for the response...
