Hi can anyone explain why this should be? It looks like I need think about cancelling because I can get a better / cheaper system from Virgin. How do I go about cancelling?

Thanks @Mark, so what Sky call an 18 month Conract is actually an 18 Month Discount period. I hadnt understood that. Is there a cancellation phone number or can I cancel via chat or email?

Cancellation options are listed at https://www.sky.com/help/articles/cancel-sky-tv
Be aware that Virgin do the same thing, a good new customer offer for 18 months followed by a substantial price increase (generally far more than Sky).

Yes, all providers call it the same thing, and it's a misnomer. If you have a subscription with Sky you have a contract with them, regardless of whether you have discounts or are paying full price.
In provider parlance, you're 'in contract' when you've agreed a minimum term discount. It's very misleading,

No, it's an 18 month minimum term contract that happens to be discounted. Surprisingly enough, it works exactly the same as all the rest of your contracts. After the minimum term it continues as a rolling monthly contract with 1 months notice to cancel. Unlike (say) car insurance it doesn't create a new minimum 18 month contract if you don't contact them at the end of minimum term which is in your favour. Try being polite to them when you phone and see what they can do for you. Maybe check out a site like Money Saving Expert to see what to expect.
Good luck with Virgin by the way if you need customer service or even just to contact them at the end of minimum term. As for better...
