Burnt out wires on Sky Q box and no tv until Xmas eve

IMG_3487.jpeg

Appalled at the service we recieved considering I pay £130 for it monthly. Outbox stopped working and speaking to an agent we discovered the F connector wires are frazzled, basically causing a fire hazard. They can't send an engineer until the 24th so we are going to miss tv in the main room and all 4 of our boxes around the house. Asked to speak to a manager to be told he was too busy to call us tonight. We have a very ill person who is now going to spend the week in silence. 22 years with sky and this is the service.

hi @HS2

Unfortunately, even when SKY had more Engineers the wait times for appointments around this time of year were often several days, so a week is not untypical.

Although the cables you  show are not fully as they should be they do not actually appear to be a electrical or fire hazard.

Is there any chance the cables have been pulled ?

Anyway, to get your service working quicker do you have a friend or family member who is reasonable at DIY and confident with a Stanley Knife or similar ?

If so, this video shows how the cables can be cut and reconnected :

How to fit Satellite F Connectors

Re: Burnt out wires on Sky Q box and no tv until Xmas eve

The coaxial cables carry only very small amounts of electrical energy and are not a fire risk. Try using one of the Youtube tutorials on how to fit/re-fit the F-plugs and you should at least be able to do a temporary repair.

Hopefully the engineer will fit new plugs and do a more permanent job.

To be honest, that's a easy DIY job, Stanley knife and pliers, a bit like when you needed to do the same to a connection for a normal tv coaxial which would plug into the aerial socket on your TV.

Look on YouTube, there's bound to be something on there.

And as far as being with Sky for decades....means nothing.  I have been with them for 25 years and it means nothing.

They advertise that Sky VIPs get speedier appointments....absolute rubbish.

Sky Q 2TB and three Sky Q Mini boxes installed on 27th March 2019.

Where?  Never seen that.

Everyone is a 'VIP'.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Households with Sky Protect Device Insurance are supposed to get priority attendance: that's completely different to the Sky VIP scheme.

At this time of year all appointment availability would be inevitably stretched even if Sky wasn't reducing its satellite dish workforce.

Yes, thanks for saying that. Judging by that picture alone, the F connnectors have come off the cables. That can happen if they were pulled yanked sharply but even then they would have had to have been poorly made initially. Normally (don't do this) F connectors are very strong, and you'd be able to lift the whole weight of the Sky Q box by one of them and swing it around.

You can get a Sky stream puck on a pay as you basis with no contract. Will set you back about a hundred pounds/euros. Check it out and see if they might give you some kind of discount and post it to you asap.
