Why do i need a new sim when upgrading to unlimited data?

you could ask if the plan can be applied to your existing sim but Sky are under no obligation to oblige to such request

The offer applies to new sims only, if Sky will not apply it to your current sim then the work around is to order the new sim, move your current now to a PAYG sim then back again to the new Sky sim.
