If you're not performing a swap then you simply purchase a new device.
You can continue paying for the old device monthly if you wish - or clear the outstanding balance.
In terms of what you do with them then it's up to you... If you order a new dataplan then it has to be activated withimn 30 days (Otherwise it will drop off your account without charge).
