How can I check to see when I can upgrade my phone for free

You can do it here (further down the page):

If you do upgrade and don't want a new sim then make sure you select the "I do not need a new plan/sim" option.

If you are struggling with this then give Sky a call on the free 150 number to do it.

If sending a phone back to Sky then make sure you get and keep proof of delivery.

There's no 'free'. You start a new plan, which may or may not be the same monthly price you are paying now. Indeed, the return value of your current phone may not squash the outstanding balance either.
