Sim not supported on iPad

I have an ipad air 2 which I have just recieved a sim for. I have activated the sum but when i put it in the ipad it says 'sim not supported'... help please?

Is the iPad locked to a different network?  (Was it purchased from Sky?)

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

The iPad was purchased from a friend. I didn't think iPads were locked?

Looks locked to another provider to me.  (Vodaphone for example)
