Sim card

My contract has come to an end and I've decided to buy a handset outright rather than on contract, and have a sim only contact. Can you take sim out of existing phone and put straight into new one and keep number etc?

...just as long as the handset isn't locked to a specific network.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers
