Phone not working abroad

I have experienced these issues the last couple of times I've travelled. Spain in Aug 23 and Italy Feb 24. I am going to Spain next month and travelling alone with my 2 children and I need to know that my phone will work.

Both times I tried everything to get it to connect but it would instantly drop out and then overheat so I had to turn it off. This caused me huge stress on holiday when I should have been relaxing. I am not obsessed with my phone but I needed it yo make calls, reservations, etc.

Will my phone work next month or do I need to move networks??
